Lead astronaut SPIKE RIGHT caught up with Lavier at Fire Lights Festival 2024:
So once and for all, how do you pronounce your name & where’d it come from
It’s just “luh-veer”, like just two syllables — not “lavi-air” or “lavi-ay”. I don’t really get worked up about people saying it wrong though so no hard feelings lolol. It’s my actual middle name too, which was also the first name of my great grandfather.
What’re your overall thoughts on the Fire Lights Festival? How’d you think your set went?
Fire Lights was awesome! I live in Pittsburgh which is only about 2.5 hours from the fest, so there were a lot of friends from there who were either on the lineup, working the fest, or just out for a good weekend. There were also a lot of industry buds there who I don’t get to see often, so it was great to catch up and spend some time with those folks. Overall vibe was very chill and fun and I had a great time watching some killer sets and goofin’ off with the buddies.
I think the set went great honestly. I am a generally anxious dude, so the pre and post set jitters can be a lot, but this one just felt good. Played a lot of my friends’ music in the first half of the set, then finished out the last half with a bunch of released and unreleased tunes of my own. I closed out the Sweet Sounds takeover on Saturday evening, which also featured Ancestyr and Huck.Jorris — I definitely want to give them their flowers for doing a great job and to the rest of the Sweet Sounds crew who are great friends and are always such a refreshing group of people to work with. Much love to Charity Sound System who had the place bumping all weekend with their Hennessey rig and to Nasty Taxi who was on visuals for my set.
Is it true the style of mustache you’ve been rocking gives you extra power? If so, any tips on how to keep it fresh and precise?
Yes tbh, but I don’t really have any tips other than sometimes it gets too big and the lil hairs start getting in the corner of my mouth and that’s really annoying. That’s when you know it’s time for a trim 😂😂😂
Was there a specific idea in mind when creating your logo? I love the slanted-ness of it
Not really! I just wanted to make it dark and beautiful at the same time, because that’s what I go for with my music. There are some upright and upside down crosses in there, kind of pushing that idea a little further.
Did the “Fruit Of The Loom” logo have the cornucopia behind it or not when we were little?
Man I really think there was a cornucopia in there unless we’re all mixing it up with some other logo. This is one of those pesky things I’ve wondered about a bit but have put zero energy into finding answers to.
Who’re some artists you’d love to see live in the next year? Any bucket list rare artists?
YES. Mainly a bunch of people from overseas like Leo Cap, Yoofee, Kercha, and Drumterror.
What’re some things that’ve inspired you to make it this far & keep going all these years?
Pretty much just not quitting. Keeping the blinders on and always looking forward. Not worrying too much about what other people are doing and focusing energy on my own thing, but also giving myself permission to take it easy for a while if I need to. There’s me and then there’s my project and they aren’t necessarily the same thing. As a person, I have needs and wants and things to take care of and if I’m not taking care of that stuff, I’m not going to be very capable of doing what needs to be done for my project. Similar to that “you can’t help anyone until you help yourself” thing — I think that applies to your passions as well.
What’re some of your favorite albums to put on when you’re going on a long road trip?
These are just the first few that come to mind, and not in any particular order but:
DjRUM – Portrait with Firewood
Kurt Vile – Wakin On A Pretty Daze
Why Bonnie – 90 In November
Stephan Bodzin – Powers of Ten
Telefon Tel Aviv – Dreams Are Not Enough
Long Arm – The Branches
Floex – Zorya
What’s your best/funniest festival memory?
Ahhh, there’s a bunch but at Yonderville a few years ago I was with KirbyBright and Zeplinn and I went to sit in a camp chair and plopped down pretty hard and just fell right through the fabric of the chair and was kind of stuck in between all the legs. That’s probably not that funny to read, but it’s always fresh in my mind for some reason.
Do Dylans have a truce with Dillions in the name game respect or are you Lowkey rivals in constant competition to see who’s the better name?
There is a treaty that all Dylan/Dillions sign when we turn 12 years old, basically a sworn testament to never bring harm to one another that dates back to 800 B.C.
What’re your plans on continuing your musical journey to get to where you want to be?
In very few words: Consistency and authenticity = longevity
